Subaru XV (12 - present)

The XV is Subaru’s first venture into the competitive crossover market. Facing the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, Mitsubishi ASX, Kia Sportage, and the BMW X1 was never going to be an easy task. The XV has done well. It’s a practical car, with good space in the cabin, plenty of room and a big boot. The seating system is quite versatile, allowing you to fold the seats down in the back in to increase the load space in the boot. The cabin is probably Subaru’s best interior work to date. It has soft-touch materials on the seats and door trims, while the dashboard is simply laid out with easy-to-use buttons and dials. There’s a lot of kit so you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. In terms of driving, it’s assured and competent. It can drive well both on and off-road. The steering can be a bit light but the ride quality is really smooth on the move.

Look out for

•  There’s lots of kit in the XV so make sure it all works

What we like

•  It’s an enjoyable and fun car to drive; handling is excellent

•  There’s a huge amount of space in the cabin and boot

•  It’s a safe car - it scored five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test

•  The diesel engine is frugal and really efficient

What we don't like

•  Visibility through the rear window is very disappointing
